Lumin has announced the new U2X Network Transport, a two-chassis flagship music streamer the company claims is “the ultimate in digital output”.
The new U2X is a two-box component in the traditional Lumin industrial design language, with the dual toroidal power supply being a smaller version of the main unit. Both chassis are precision CNC milled from a solid billet of natural or black anodised aluminium. As a network player, the U2X eschews a digital-to-analogue converter yet, having said that, the unit features a new “Transport-Specific” clocking architecture along a stream of connectivity options. The U2X’s processing power has been substantially boosted by the new System-on-Chip (SoC) processor.
Starting at the extreme left, U2X offers a gold plated ground post, a ‘Reset’ button, an RJ45 gigabit network socket, an SFP fibre network socket (RJ45 and SFP can be used simultaneously and also sports a built-in dual network switch), two USB-A ports catering to audio (isolated) and for storage devices. In addition, there are three BNC 10MHz Clock sockets (one in, two outs), in addition to Toslink optical, RCA and BNC coaxial S/PDIF, and AES/EBU XLR digital outputs. A 10-pin screw connector interfaces with the outboard power supply.
File formats are comprehensive, to say the least and span the gamut of DSD formats such as DSF, DFF and DoP while PMC supports FLAC, AIFF, WAV, ALAC and more. Resolution via USB is supported up to DSD512 and up to 32-bit/768 kHz for PCM while the remainder of the digital connectivity supports resolutions up to 24-bit/192 kHz. The U2X is Roon Ready and compatible with music streaming services via UPnP such as Tidal and Tidal Connect, Qobuz and Qobuz Connect, Spotify and Spotify Connect, QQMusic (QPlay compatible), Internet Radio, MQA, Plex and more. Leedh Processing (lossless audio volume) and Airplay 2 are also onboard while Lumin’s bespoke app makes music library control a breeze.
