Japan’s STAX, a pioneer of electrostatic headphone technology, evolves its iconic SR-007 headphones with the new SR-007S Earspeaker.
The new open-back SR-007S push-pull electrostatic headphones now feature improved electrostatic diaphragms and fixed electrodes for a claimed improvement in clarity, detail and overall greater performance. Compared to previous iterations, tonal precision and overall accuracy have been enhanced via a refined etching process that reduces the fixed electrodes’ vent hole diameter by 20% resulting in improved air flow.
In a trickle down from the SR-X9000 flagship model, the SR-007S employs a new “arc” which incorporates a movable hinge allowing superior comfort and head fit, the latter enhanced by the adjustment-free rubber insert on the head pad attachment. The arc itself features a stainless steel plate designed for rigidity and reduction of deleterious vibrations.
The SR-007S’s ear pads are constructed to rotate in order to adjust to all head shapes while further comfort is provided by the sheepskin ear pad lining (artificial leather is used on the outside). STAX claims the ear pad design controls sound reflections and improves the SR-007S’s overall acoustic properties. The inner ear pad has been shaped to further ameliorate sound absorption, with the new design said to provide a larger soundstage.
The SR-007S’s frequency response specifications show a wide bandwidth spanning from 6 Hz to 41 kHz, with the capacitance quoted as 110 pico-farads while the system impedance is given as 145 kohms. Sound Pressure Sensitivity is said to be 101dB.
The SR-007S features a modular detachable parallel OFC 6-strand, low-capacitance cable design. In true SR-007 aesthetic tradition, the SR-007S is finished in a signature STAX brown tone.
