Digital playback software specialist Roon Labs has had a stellar rise in terms of what, arguably, many audio enthusiasts and music lovers around the world consider the best music playback platform. The company’s superbly designed software, with its state-of-the-art user interface and comprehensive metadata provision, is compatible with just about every file type and many music streaming services including Tidal. An ever-growing number of ‘Roon Ready’ devices also spreads across the spectrum of digital file playback. Now, Roon Labs announces its next indent into the audio space.

Content with the wide audio enthusiast acceptance of its software playback platform, Roon Labs has now announced the release of its own range of hardware options. The Nucleus and Nucleus+ are custom-designed streaming devices that are also multi-zone-ready in order to stream music to any device around the home.

The Nucleus and Nucleus+ streaming devices are compatible with a whole… umm, stream of devices from major manufacturers such as Sonos, Bluesound, NAD, PS Audio, dCS, Naim, Bryston, Krell, DEQX and dozens more popular brands. Both units are AirPlay compatible and are capable of streaming simultaneously to ‘more than five zones’ from NAS drives, USB storage devices and Tidal.

The units also feature DSP user customisation features which allow optimum playback and accurate acoustic matching to any home environment. The DSP function offers equalisation, room correction and speaker setup assistance with all of these functions being independently adaptable to each room. In fact, the Nucleus and Nucleus+ are compatible with Control4 and Crestron integration systems so installations with high levels of complexity can also be catered for.

“Aside from being a powerful, fan-less music server, what sets Nucleus apart is that it’s powered by Roon OS – a fast and lightweight operating system optimised to do just one thing: browse and play music” Sam Encel Director at Interdyn, the Australian importer, told SoundStage! Australia. Encel continued, “Roon is a multi-room, multi-user networked audio platform built to the exacting standards of audiophiles, so it offers features like bit-perfect playback, DSD and PCM upsampling, multichannel playback, and signal path display.”
